What a RAW file actually is
A RAW file is the untouched capture straight off your camera's sensor, saved before the camera turns it into a picture. Shoot JPEG and the camera develops the shot for you: it sets white balance, contrast, color, and sharpening, applies noise reduction, then discards the rest. Shoot RAW and all of that detail stays in the file, and the developing is left to you.
This is why your computer can show you a RAW file but will not really let you edit it. Most cameras tuck a small JPEG preview inside the RAW file so the screen on the back of the camera and your file browser have something to display. When you double-click the file, you are usually looking at that preview, not the actual capture underneath.
The preview is a thumbnail, not the negative. To change exposure, pull detail back into a blown-out sky, or correct color at the sensor level, you need software that reads the full RAW file and develops it from there.

The common RAW formats and who writes them
There is no single RAW format. Each camera maker writes its own, and the file extension tells you who made it. Inside, the file holds everything the sensor captured, plus a record of the camera, the lens, and the settings you shot at, including the ISO.
Here are the ones you will run into most:
- CR3: Canon's current RAW format, written by recent Canon bodies.
- NEF: Nikon's RAW format, short for Nikon Electronic Format.
- ARW: Sony's RAW format, used across the Alpha line.
- DNG: Adobe's open RAW format, also written by many phones, drones, and other cameras.
DNG is the odd one out. Adobe published it as an open format, so it is not tied to a single manufacturer, which is why phones, drones, and a range of cameras write it. Because every other format is its own thing, a program has to understand each one specifically. That is why a file that opens on one machine can refuse to open on another.
Why a viewer opens the file but cannot develop it
A plain image viewer is built to display finished pictures: JPEG, PNG, HEIC. Hand it a RAW file and the most it can usually do is pull out that embedded preview and show it to you. You see the shot, but there is nothing to work on.
Developing a RAW file is a different job. The software has to take everything the sensor captured and turn it into color, set a white balance, build tone and contrast, and deal with noise, all from scratch. That is what a real RAW editor does, and a viewer does not.
It is also why RAW leaves you room to rescue a frame. The highlight detail in a bright sky, and the shadow detail under a bird's wing, is still sitting in the file. A viewer cannot reach it. A RAW editor can.
How Kairos opens and develops a RAW file

Shoot RAW, then export what you need
If you have been shooting JPEG, this is the argument for switching to RAW. The extra latitude, the room to fix white balance and recover highlights, only helps if you have something that can develop the file. RAW plus a real editor is the pair that matters.
When the edit is done, export what the job needs. Kairos writes JPEG for sharing and the web, TIFF for more editing in another program, and DNG. Keep the original RAW as your negative, since you can always go back and develop it again.
Common questions
Why can I see my RAW file but not edit it?
Your file browser is showing a small JPEG preview that the camera embedded in the RAW file, not the capture itself. A plain viewer can display that preview, but it cannot develop what the sensor recorded underneath. For that you need a RAW editor that reads the actual file.
What is the difference between CR3, NEF, ARW, and DNG?
They are RAW formats from different sources. CR3 is Canon, NEF is Nikon, and ARW is Sony. DNG is Adobe's open format, also written by many phones, drones, and other cameras.
