The export is a real decision, not an afterthought

You spent time getting the capture clean and the edit right. Then the last step, the one that decides what other people actually see, gets a single click and no thought. That is where good work quietly loses quality.

An export is a translation. You are taking the full edit you can see on screen and writing it into a file that a browser, a print lab, or another editor has to read. Different destinations want different files. Pick the wrong one and you either throw away quality you cannot get back, or you hand someone a file they cannot work with.

Three formats cover almost everything a photographer needs: JPEG, TIFF, and DNG. Kairos Studio exports to all three. The rest of this article is about which to reach for, and why.

JPEG vs TIFF vs DNG: what each is for

The short version: JPEG is for showing the picture, TIFF is for protecting quality, and DNG is there when a destination specifically asks for it. Here is how that plays out in practice.

None of these is better than the others in the abstract. They answer different questions. The only real mistake is sending a format that does not match where the file is headed.

Why a 16-bit file survives more editing than a JPEG

A JPEG stores 8 bits per color channel. That gives you 256 possible levels of red, green, and blue. On a finished photo, viewed as is, 256 levels look completely smooth.

The trouble starts when someone edits that JPEG further. Push the contrast, lift the shadows, or shift the color, and you are stretching those 256 levels apart. Gaps open up between them. A smooth sky can turn into visible bands of tone, and once that banding appears, it does not come back.

A 16-bit file stores thousands of levels per channel instead of 256. There are so many more levels between any two tones that heavy editing has room to move without tearing the image apart. That is why print labs and editors ask for a TIFF: the format can carry that depth, take another round of work, and still hold together.

If the picture is truly final and only going to be looked at, a JPEG is fine and much smaller. If anyone might edit it after you, a TIFF gives them far more to work with.

A JPEG is a finished sentence. A 16-bit file is one you can still rewrite.

Your export already carries the whole edit

Whatever you export from Kairos Studio carries the full edit baked in. The workflow runs Analyze, then Denoise, then Develop, then whatever you adjusted in Kairos Pro, and the finished file reflects all of it.

That matters most for the denoise work. Because Denoise runs before Develop, the tone and color are built on a clean base, and the export you send out is already that clean, developed result. You are not handing off a noisy RAW and hoping the other end cleans it up. The grain reduction and the detail protection, feathers, skin texture, edges, shadows, are already in the pixels.

So when you send a JPEG to a client or a TIFF to a lab, you are sending the picture you actually made, not a rough version that needs saving later.

Before you send anything, run through a few quick checks. None of this takes long, and it saves the awkward re-send later.

Common questions

Which format should I send to a client?

If the client just wants the picture to use and view, send a JPEG. It is small, opens on any device, and looks great as a finished image. Send a TIFF instead only if they told you they plan to edit or print the file themselves and need the extra quality.

What does my print lab want?

Most labs prefer a TIFF, often 16-bit, because print work involves further sharpening and color handling that a JPEG does not take as well. The safest move is to ask the specific lab for their preferred format and bit depth before you export.

When would I export a DNG?

DNG is one of the three formats Kairos Studio can write, alongside JPEG and TIFF. Reach for it when a destination specifically asks for a DNG, since some workflows and archives are built around that format. If the photo is done and just needs to be seen, a JPEG is all you need.

Is a JPEG always lower quality?

Not for viewing. A well-exported JPEG of a finished photo looks the same as the original to the eye on a screen. The limitation shows up only when the file is edited further, because it holds less tone and color to stretch. For a final image being looked at, a JPEG is the right tool.

Does the denoise and edit work survive the export?

Yes. The file you export from Kairos Studio carries the full result of Analyze, Denoise, Develop, and any Kairos Pro adjustments. The noise reduction and detail work are already in the pixels, so what you send is the finished photograph, not a rough file that needs cleanup later.

Send a file that survives the trip
