What the sensor actually records

A camera sensor does not see color, and it does not see a scene. It counts light. Each photosite collects photons over the exposure and reports a brightness value, stored with as much precision as the sensor allows. On most cameras that is 12 or 14 bits per channel, which works out to thousands of steps of tone between black and white.

A RAW file is that reading, saved close to untouched. It holds the whole range the sensor captured, the faint detail up in the highlights and the faint detail down in the shadows, before anything has been decided about how the picture should look.

What a JPEG bakes in

A JPEG is a photograph the camera has already finished. Before it writes the file it sets a white balance, applies a contrast curve, adds saturation and sharpening, then compresses the result to 8 bits per channel. That is 256 steps of tone in place of thousands.

None of those choices are wrong. They are just permanent. Everything the sensor recorded beyond what the JPEG kept is discarded, not hidden, and no amount of editing the JPEG brings it back. You end up moving around what the camera decided to keep, not what the sensor actually saw.

The latitude RAW keeps

Latitude is how much room you have to change a photograph after the shutter closed. RAW gives you a lot of it, because the full capture is still on hand to work with.

White balance is the clearest case. In a RAW file it is really just a note about the color of the light, so you can change it later at no cost. In a JPEG the color is already blended into the pixels, and correcting a strong cast means fighting the file the whole way.

Why clean edits need the RAW

Noise reduction and tone work both lean on what a RAW file carries, and on two things in particular: the untouched capture from your sensor, and a record of how the shot was made.

Every RAW stores the camera model and the ISO. That tells an editor a lot. Noise at ISO 6400 on one sensor does not behave like noise at ISO 6400 on another, and reduction that ignores the difference either smears fine detail or leaves speckle behind. A JPEG has already had noise reduction run on it, sight unseen, so the grain and the correction are baked together before the file ever reaches you.

Kairos reads the camera and the ISO straight from the RAW file and tunes its denoise to match, then develops tone and color on that clean base. A finished JPEG hides the very information that work depends on.

RAW vs JPEG: the tradeoff, and the formats

RAW is not free. The files run several times larger than JPEGs, and they are not finished pictures, so each one needs a develop step before it looks right or leaves your computer. That is the trade: some storage and a little time in exchange for room to work.

Most cameras write RAW in their own flavor. The extension on the file changes by maker, but the idea underneath is the same, the sensor reading kept whole.

Common questions

Does shooting RAW make my photos look better straight out of the camera?

No, and it often looks flatter at first. A RAW file is unfinished on purpose, so it looks its best after a develop step, not before. What you are buying is control, not a nicer preview on the back of the camera.

Can I shoot RAW and JPEG at once?

Most cameras have a RAW plus JPEG mode that writes both files. You get a ready-to-share JPEG now and the full RAW to develop later. It uses more card space, but it is a safe way to start shooting RAW without giving anything up.

How much bigger are RAW files?

It depends on the camera and resolution, but a RAW usually runs several times the size of the matching JPEG. A card that holds a few thousand JPEGs might hold a few hundred RAWs, so plan storage and cards around that.

Is DNG different from CR3, NEF, and ARW?

DNG is an open RAW format, while CR3, NEF, and ARW each belong to a specific maker (Canon, Nikon, Sony). All of them hold everything the sensor recorded. Some cameras and phones write DNG directly, and other RAW files can be converted to it.

I already shot JPEG. Can I get the lost detail back?

No. Once the JPEG is written, the extra tonal range is discarded, not tucked away somewhere. You can still edit the JPEG, but with far less room to move. The takeaway is to switch to RAW before the shot that matters, not after.

See it on your own shots

The next shot you care about, set the camera to RAW and keep the sensor's full record. Shoot the same scene as RAW and JPEG if you want the comparison, then push both: recover a highlight, cool the white balance, open the shadows, and watch which file still has something to give.
