Why low light is hard
A camera does not see in the dark. It collects light. In a bright scene, a huge number of photons land on the sensor during the exposure, and the signal is strong and clean. Cut the light down to a dim room, a street at dusk, or a stage lit by one spot, and far fewer photons arrive. The signal gets weak.
A weak signal is the whole problem. The sensor has its own baseline hum, a small amount of electronic noise that is always present. When the real signal is strong, you never notice it. When the signal is faint, that hum becomes a real part of what you captured, and it shows up as grain in the shadows and colored speckle in flat areas.
So low light does not really force one hard choice. It forces a chain of them. To gather enough light you can open the aperture, slow the shutter, or raise ISO, and each of those buys you brightness at a price. The skill is knowing which price to pay first.
Low light photography settings: what each one costs
Three settings control how much light reaches the sensor and how it gets recorded. In good light you can set them almost freely. In low light they start fighting each other, and every move has a side effect worth naming.
- Aperture: A wider aperture (a lower f-number) lets in more light, which is exactly what you want. The cost is a thinner plane of focus, so a portrait shot wide open can hold the eyes sharp while the ears go soft.
- Shutter: A slower shutter keeps the sensor collecting light for longer. The cost is motion. Too slow and your own hands blur the frame, or a moving subject smears across it.
- ISO: Raising ISO amplifies the signal coming off the sensor so the image looks bright enough. It amplifies the noise along with it, which is why high-ISO frames go grainy and lose fine detail.
None of these is free, and none of them is the enemy. The point is to reach for them in an order that protects the things you cannot fix later. A blurred frame is gone. Noise, handled well, is not.
Set your shutter floor first
Before you touch anything else, decide the slowest shutter speed that will still give you a sharp frame. That number is your floor, and you do not go below it.
For a still subject handheld, a common starting point is one over your focal length. At 50mm, aim for around 1/50 of a second or faster. Longer lenses magnify your own shake, so a 200mm lens wants roughly 1/200 or faster. Image stabilization buys you a few stops below that, but it steadies the camera, not the subject.
A moving subject rewrites the floor entirely. A person walking needs something like 1/125 to stay crisp. A child running, a dog, a bird lifting off, and you are into 1/500, 1/1000, or faster no matter how dark it is. If the subject moves, shutter speed is not negotiable, and the other two settings have to make up the light.
Open up and steady yourself before you raise ISO
Once the shutter floor is set, find your light from the two settings that do not add noise before you spend the one that does.
Open the aperture as wide as the shot allows. If you need more depth of field to keep a whole face or a full scene sharp, you have to stop back down, but in low light the wide end of your lens is doing real work.
Then steady yourself. Bracing against a wall, resting your elbows on a table, or setting the camera on any solid surface can win you a stop or two of shutter speed without any cost to the image. A cheap tripod turns a hopeless handheld frame into an easy one for a static scene.
Only after those are spent do you raise ISO, and then you raise it as far as the shot genuinely needs and no further. High ISO is a valid tool, not a failure. A sharp, well-exposed frame at ISO 6400 beats a dark, blurry one at ISO 800 every time. The goal is to arrive at the ISO you need on purpose, rather than letting the camera drift there to cover a shutter speed you never chose.
Expose to protect the shadows, and shoot RAW
Noise lives in the shadows. That is where the signal is weakest, so that is where grain and color speckle show up first. How you expose decides how much of your image sits down in that danger zone.
Given the choice, expose a little brighter rather than darker. A frame that is slightly too dark hides detail in murky shadows, and when you lift those shadows later, you lift the noise with them and it comes up looking worse than it was. A frame exposed to keep the shadows off the floor gives you cleaner material to work with. Watch your highlights so you do not blow them out, but do not starve the shot to protect a small bright edge.
Shape the light you already have. Turn your subject toward the one window, the open door, the streetlight, or the practical lamp in the room. Moving a person a step into better light does more for a low-light frame than any setting, because it puts real signal back on the sensor instead of asking you to amplify a weak one.
This is where RAW earns its place. A RAW file keeps everything the sensor recorded, with the full tonal range and nothing baked in. That headroom is what lets you recover a shadow, correct the color of mixed indoor light, and pull detail back out of a dim corner. A JPEG has already thrown most of that away. In good light you might not miss it. In low light, RAW is the difference between a frame you can rescue and one you cannot.
Common questions
Is it better to raise ISO or use a slower shutter speed?
Protect your shutter floor first. If a slower shutter would blur the subject or your own hands, that frame is lost and cannot be fixed. High ISO adds noise, but noise can be reduced later. So once you hit the slowest shutter speed that stays sharp, raise ISO to make up the rest of the light rather than dropping below that floor.
What shutter speed do I need for a sharp handheld shot?
For a still subject, a common starting point is one over your focal length, so about 1/50 at 50mm and 1/200 at 200mm. Image stabilization can buy a few stops below that. A moving subject needs more regardless of the light: roughly 1/125 for a walking person and 1/500 or faster for anything quick.
Should I expose brighter or darker in low light?
Lean brighter, within reason. Noise lives in the shadows, and a dark frame buries detail there. When you lift those shadows later, the noise comes up with them. Exposing to keep the shadows off the floor gives cleaner material. Just watch your highlights so you do not clip them completely.
Does shooting RAW actually matter in low light?
It matters most in low light. A RAW file keeps the full tonal range the sensor recorded, which is the headroom you need to recover shadows, fix the color of mixed indoor lighting, and pull back detail. A JPEG has already discarded most of that, so a dim frame that RAW could rescue may be beyond saving as a JPEG.
How much noise is too much?
There is no fixed line. Some grain reads as texture and does no harm, especially in a print. It becomes a problem when it smears fine detail or throws colored speckle across skin and flat skies. The better question is whether the frame is sharp and properly exposed, because a clean, well-shot high-ISO file leaves you plenty to work with afterward.

Get these choices right in the moment and you come home with the best possible starting point: a sharp frame, exposed to protect the shadows, saved as RAW. That is most of the battle. What is left is the noise that low light always leaves behind, even in a well-shot file, because the physics do not go away just because your technique was good.
