Why high ISO gets noisy
The light fades, the shutter needs to stay fast, and there is only one dial left to turn: ISO. Raising it keeps you shooting, but it comes at a cost.
When you raise ISO, the camera amplifies the signal coming off the sensor, and it amplifies the noise along with it. You get grain in the shadows, colored speckle in flat areas, and detail that starts to feel muddy.
Good noise reduction has one job: reduce the noise in your RAW file without wiping out the detail underneath it. That balance is the whole game.
What high-ISO noise actually is
Noise is not one thing. It shows up in two main forms, and telling them apart helps you see what denoising in post is trying to fix.
- Luminance noise: The fine, grain-like texture that sits in shadows and midtones. Left alone it looks gritty. Removed carelessly it turns skin and skies plastic.
- Color noise: The red, green, and blue speckle that pools in dark and flat areas. It is the more distracting of the two, and usually the first to go.
- Where it hides: Shadows, clear skies, and any smooth surface, which is exactly where the eye looks for clean tone.
