One intelligence, two ways of working
Kairos denoises with Kairos Intelligence, the on-device AI at the center of the app. Smart and In-Depth are not two separate AIs. They are two modes: two ways of putting the same intelligence to work on a noisy frame.
The split exists because frames make different demands. Most images want a quick, confident clean so you can get on with tone and color. A handful want more: a bird shot at ISO 6400 in failing light, a portrait where the shadows carry both skin texture and speckle, a night street scene you plan to print large.
So the choice is never between two different AIs, because there is only one intelligence. It is about how much time a frame deserves. Smart balances speed and quality for the many. In-Depth slows down for the few.
What Smart does
Smart is the automatic mode, and the default. It reads the camera and the ISO out of the RAW file, tunes the noise reduction to match, and gives you a clean frame with no setup. You do not turn a dial or pick a strength.
Smart is built to balance speed and quality. For low-ISO frames and most images, that balance is the whole story: the noise comes out, the detail stays, and you move on to develop.

- Balanced: Trades speed and quality sensibly, tuned by the camera and ISO in the RAW file.
- The default: The right pass for low-ISO frames and the large majority of what you shoot.
What In-Depth does
In-Depth is the same intelligence taking more time with the frame. Where Smart is automatic, In-Depth is the manual mode: it works at 100 percent, for pixel-level control, on the images where a quick pass is not enough, the high-ISO and very noisy frames where you want to see exactly what is happening in the shadows and the fine detail.
It takes a little longer, and that is the point. Where noise is heaviest, the extra time buys a closer clean and a closer look. You judge the result up close and tune it until the balance between clean and detailed is where you want it.
This is where you protect the things noise reduction can quietly erase: a feather edge, individual strands of hair, the grain of skin, the texture in a shadow. At 100 percent you can see whether those survived.
How to choose in practice
The workflow is simple. Let Smart take the first pass on everything. It is fast, it needs nothing from you, and for most frames the result is finished noise work.
Reach for In-Depth when the frame earns it. If the ISO climbed, if the shadows got lifted, if it will be printed large, or if the automatic pass left you wanting a closer look, switch modes and judge it at 100 percent.
You do not have to decide up front. Run Smart, look at the result, and let the image tell you whether it needs more. Most will not. The few that do are exactly the ones worth the extra minutes.

Why denoise runs before develop
In Kairos Studio, denoise runs before develop. In either mode, the noise work comes early in the workflow, ahead of the tone and color, and that order is deliberate.
Noise is easiest to deal with before you start pushing the image around. Once you lift shadows, add contrast, and build color, you also amplify whatever noise was sitting underneath. Cleaning first means tone and color are built on a clean base, not on top of grain and speckle that later edits will exaggerate.
So whichever mode you use, Smart on a routine frame or In-Depth on a demanding one, the develop stage inherits a cleaner starting point. The finished edit is built on the frame after the noise came out, not before.

Then take the roughest frame, switch to In-Depth, and study it at 100 percent. Watch a feather edge or a patch of skin texture as you tune. Once you have felt the difference between the fast pass and the closer look, choosing between them becomes second nature.
